Creating Positive Pathways for Young People

Every young person has potential, but finding a positive direction is not always easy. Challenges at home, school or within the community can affect confidence, relationships, education and future opportunities. Having the right support at the right time can help young people recognise their strengths and begin moving forward.

At Jabalbina On Country, we support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, their families and communities throughout Far North Queensland. Our programs are designed to provide culturally grounded support while helping young people develop the confidence, skills and connections they need for their future.

Our approach is built around four key pillars: Connection, Culture, Growth and Pathways.

Connection means helping young people strengthen relationships with family, community and positive supports. A strong support network can give young people people they can trust and turn to when they face challenges.

Culture provides a strong sense of identity and belonging. Through culturally grounded experiences and time on Country, young people can strengthen their understanding of culture, develop pride in who they are and build meaningful connections with community.

Growth is about recognising what each young person is capable of. Through mentoring, life skills, positive decision making and practical experiences, young people can develop confidence and resilience while learning how to respond to challenges.

Pathways focus on the future. We support young people to think about meaningful goals and explore opportunities connected to education, training and employment.

Programs such as Regional Reset – Next Step On Country demonstrate how this approach can support young people through different stages of their journey. The program combines pre-engagement, an immersive On Country experience and structured post-program transition support. This creates continuity around the young person and their family rather than treating a program as a single isolated experience.

Early intervention is also an important part of our work. Supporting young people early can help strengthen protective factors and create opportunities to address challenges before they become more difficult.

Our support can include cultural programs, mentoring, family support, early intervention, education and employment support, life skills, community engagement and intensive case management.

Importantly, we understand that every young person is different. Their experiences, strengths, goals and support needs are unique. That is why our work focuses on relationships and understanding the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

A positive pathway does not always look the same for everyone. It might mean returning to education, developing a new skill, strengthening family relationships, reconnecting with culture, preparing for employment or simply gaining the confidence to make a positive decision.

By walking alongside young people, families and communities, we aim to help create opportunities for stronger futures.

The journey forward may have challenges, but with connection, culture, growth and the right support, young people can build the confidence to create their own positive pathway.
