✧ THEIR LEGACY, OUR INSPIRATION✧
Honouring the Legacy of Our Elders
The Eastern Kuku Yalanji Elders who fought tirelessly for the recognition of our rights and the establishment of Jabalbina laid the foundation for something far greater than an organisation, they created a lasting legacy for future generations.
Through their determination, resilience and vision, Jabalbina has become a respected Aboriginal organisation that not only protects and manages Eastern Kuku Yalanji Country but also extends its knowledge, expertise and leadership to communities across Cape York and the Torres Strait. Today, remote communities such as Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Aurukun, the Torres Strait Islands and many other Cape communities benefit from the capacity, experience and support that has grown from the efforts of those original Eastern Kuku Yalanji leaders.
Their vision has enabled Jabalbina to deliver meaningful outcomes in land and sea management, disaster recovery, environmental restoration, cultural heritage protection, ranger development and community resilience. Increasingly, it has also positioned the organisation to contribute to broader social outcomes, including creating employment pathways, strengthening cultural identity and supporting initiatives that help address youth crime through connection to Country, culture, skills and meaningful work.
This is something every Eastern Kuku Yalanji person can take immense pride in. The courage of our Elders has created opportunities not only for our own people but for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout Far North Queensland. Their legacy demonstrates what can be achieved when Traditional Owners lead with integrity, cultural authority and a commitment to future generations.
As Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, we should never underestimate the significance of what has been built. Jabalbina stands as a testament to our Elders’ strength and determination—a reminder that our responsibility is not only to care for our own Country, but also to share knowledge, build capacity and inspire other communities to achieve the same success.
We honour those who came before us by continuing to lead with humility, professionalism and pride, ensuring that the next generation inherits an organisation that is even stronger than the one entrusted to us. In doing so, we reaffirm that being Eastern Kuku Yalanji is not simply about where we come from—it is about carrying forward a legacy of leadership, service and stewardship for the benefit of all.
