John is a Cultural Mentor from Warraber (Sue) Island, Kulkalgal Nation. Raised sitting with his Elders learning to live off the sea and land, he brings hunting, fishing and island dancing into his work with young people.

What I enjoy most about working with the YP’s is when we take them out of the community to do activity’s whether its fishing , swimming or taking them to the beach. But mostly it seeing them smile and laugh is most rewarding thing.

Culture is very important to me , I grew up on my island home Sue island (Warraber) sitting with my elders as they pass knowledge to us young ones, teaching us to live off the sea and land also teaching us how to hunt. Island dancing is a big part or my culture as well .

Without culture we wouldn’t have any meaning if you know what I mean.

My message to young people

-stay out of trouble

-sit with your elders and learn about culture

-and always show respect no shatter what.
